1st Civitas Academy
26-28 October 2021
From the 26th until the 28th of October, Civitas organized the first edition of the Civitas Academy, hosted by the Istituto Luigi Sturzo in Rome.
On the 26th the Academy started with a warm welcome by Civitas President Prof. Renato Moro, Istituto Sturzo President Prof. Nicola Antonetti and Istituto Sturzo Head of EU and International Affairs Dr. Loredana Teodorescu. In the afternoon, we were visited the library and precious archives kept at the Istituto Luigi Sturzo such as the extensive papers of Giulio Andreotti.
The second day of the Academy started with two keynote lectures. First Prof. Wolfram Kaiser (University of Portsmouth) spoke about the European People's Party Group in the European
Parliament during the Cold War. Then, Prof. Paolo Pombeni (University of Bologna) presented a keynote on the ideology of Christian Democracy. In the afternoon, three young researchers presented their projects, after which there was room for discussion and fruitful exchanges.
The third day, started of in similar fashion with the presentation and discussion of two more research projects by young academics. After the break there was time for the researchers to conduct archival research in the Istituto Luigi Sturzo. Each researcher was provided with personalized advice from the archivists working at the Istituto Sturzo. The day concluded with a book presentation of the Civitas first volume "Christian Democracy and the Fall of
Communism" (eds. Michael Gehler, Piotr H. Kosicki and Helmut Wohnout, CIVITAS Studies in Christian Democracy, Leuven University Press, 2019) with co-editor Prof. Piotr H. Kosicki (University of Maryland), Dr. Laura Fasanaro (Università Roma Tre) and Prof. Giovanni Bernardini (Università degli Studi di Verona).
During the final day, researchers once more had the opportunity for personal research in the archives of the Istituto Sturzo, before the first edition of the Civitas Academy came to an end with some concluding remarks.
