Civitas Webinar Series

25-27 November 2020

From the 25th until the 27th of November 2020, Civitas organized a first Webinar Series. Spread over several days, senior and young researchers exchanged ideas and future outlines for a research agenda on the history of Christian Democracy.

On Wednesday the 25th of November, after a charming welcome by Civitas President Prof. Dr. Renato Moro, we invited top notch historians to present their view on the current research on Christian Democracy. Among others, they highlighted the need for internationalisation by pointing at the under researched issue of Latin American Christian Democracy, and called for more comparative research. The speakers at the round table included: Prof. Massimo Di Giuseppe (IULM University, Milan)
Prof. Gerd-Rainer Horn (Sciences Po, Paris)
Prof. Sławomir Łukasiewicz (John Paul II Catholic University, Lublin)
Prof. Dr. Hanns Jürgen Küsters (Bonn University, Honorary President Civitas).
The full discussion is now available online, link below. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3cl7k6skNiY.

On the 26th of Novemeber, Prof. Piotr Kosicki (University of Maryland) gave a thought provoking lecture on 'Why Study Christian Democracy?' In his talk, Prof. Kosicki immediately elaborated on some issues that were discussed the day before such as Christian Democracy in Latin America and the USA and Christian Democracy across the Iron Curtain. Finally, he formulated a research agenda of a 'Connective History' of Christian Democracy. His presentation is available online, link below.

The series concluded with a closed session for the participants of the forthcoming Civitas Academy in Rome, during which they briefly discussed their papers. A promising introduction that made us curious for more. Researchers who are interested can still apply for the Civitas Academy (4-7 May 2021), as we reopened the application procedure for a small number of interested scholars. The CfP can be found below.
