Archief August-Edmond De Schryver

Scope and content

The archives of De Schryver refer to more or less all important Belgian political events since the 1920s. As for the last twenty years, after Deschryver’s departure from the active political scene, they contain more documentation (such as cuttings which Deschryver kept as a person interested, and not as a fellow member).

The most extensive files refer to the workings and problems of the pre-war Catholic Party. The Second World War, too, is well represented in the archives. In this sense, mainly the files concerning his foreign missions and the ministership in the Pierlot government are of importance.

The documents concerning the international Christian democratic movement – especially the European ones – which initiate research on the motives of the Christian democracy for the European unification, and the files concerning his ministership of Kongo and Ruanda-Urundi are pretty elaborate and fascinating. Moreover, the files related to the establishment of the UNO, Belgian politics during the first postwar years and the activities of De Schryver after his political career are well documented with internal records.

At KADOC, one can find the recordings and text of an elaborate and in-depth interview with De Schryver (October 26 and October 27, 1987). The conversation deals with almost all aspects of his career. Detailed folders release the text of the interview. A selection of the photo archive was also handed over.
